What is the purpose of installing an exit to the roof?
Roof exits are installed to allow easy access to the roof. Thanks to it, it is possible to carry out the necessary inspections and repairs of the roof sheathing, as well as perform work related to cleaning the chimney flues, milling the chimney, and other activities, e.g. installation work on the roof. Such a device is necessary in the case of single- and multi-family residential buildings, as well as multi-apartment buildings and public utility buildings, but the regulations regarding its location and additional safety requirements differ slightly.
The choice of a roof hatch takes into account, m.in other things, the angle of inclination of the roof and the type of material from which it is made. The manhole should guarantee safe access to the roof and provide comfort during use. Its parameters, such as the degree of tightness and resistance to environmental factors, are no less important. The minimum permitted dimensions of the roof hatch are 0.8 m x 0.8 m. In the case of entering the roof through the door – this solution is often used in multi-apartment buildings – the exit to the roof must be much larger. In this case, the optimal dimensions are: 0.8 m wide and 1.9 m high. The dimensions of the roof hatch should therefore depend on its type. Smaller roof hatches are used as an entrance to the roof directly from living quarters or the attic. Larger manholes, i.e. doors, are used in the case of an entrance from a staircase, but also in this case it is possible to use a hatch with dimensions of 0.8 m by 0.8 m. On roofs with a significant slope, accessories that enable safe repairs, chimney cleaning and installation works are an indispensable complement to the roof hatch. The same applies to roofs made of brittle materials.

What dimensions should the roof exit have?
The dimensions of the exit to the roof should be adapted to the building and fire regulations in force in Poland. According to the Regulation of the Minister of Infrastructure of 12 April 2002 on the technical conditions to be met by buildings and their location, the minimum width should be 800 mm and the minimum height should be 1000 mm. Larger dimensions are acceptable, but are not required by law.
The dimensions should be in accordance with the applicable building and fire regulations in Poland.
If it is to be used for evacuation purposes, it should meet the additional requirements of fire regulations. In accordance with the Regulation of the Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration of 7 June 2010 on fire protection of buildings, other structures and areas, the minimum roof area used as an escape route should be 1.20 m², and the minimum dimensions should be 80 cm x 150 cm. In addition, such an exit must be equipped with a ladder or wooden stairs leading to the roof and with handrails to prevent falling.
The dimensions should be adapted to the number of people who will use it. In the case of an element used as an escape route, the minimum surface should allow at least two people to move freely at the same time.
