Technical conditions
In the process of designing roof exits, it is important to take into account several key aspects. The most important thing is that the size is adjusted so that it ensures comfortable and safe use, both when opening and closing, as well as when going up and off the roof. The dimensions of the access window should be consistent with the size of the roof opening. If the roof access window is already installed, it is necessary to precisely measure its dimensions in order to choose a product with the right dimensions.
The size of the roof access window must comply with the applicable standards and regulations. In accordance with the Regulation of the Minister of Infrastructure of 12 April 2002 on the technical conditions of buildings and their location, the minimum width of the access window should be 800 mm, and the minimum height should be 1000 mm. In accordance with the Regulation of the Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration of 7 June 2010 on fire protection of buildings and areas, the minimum area of the roof access window serving as an escape route should be 1.20 m², with the minimum dimensions of 80 cm x 150 cm. In addition, the emergency exit must be equipped with a ladder or stairs to allow access to the roof and handrails to prevent falls.
Is it mandatory to install on a flat roof?
This element is required in buildings with two or more above-ground storeys. In accordance with the Regulation of the Minister of Infrastructure of 12 April 2002 on the technical conditions of buildings and their location, it is necessary to provide access to the roof from at least one staircase, which allows access to technical equipment installed on the roof. In high-rise (W) and high-rise (WW) buildings, such exits should be accessible from every staircase.
A door 0.8 m wide and at least 1.9 m high or access hatches with dimensions of 0.8 × 0.8 m in the clear may be used as an exit from the staircase to the roof, provided that access to them should meet the conditions set out in § 101.
In the case of roofs with a slope of more than 25% and covered with brittle (breakable) materials, permanent access to chimneys, technical devices and radio and television antennas should be ensured. On roofs with a slope of more than 100%, fixed brackets for safety ropes or safety barriers should be installed over the lower edge of the roof.
