The testing and certification of fire and smoke dampers is extremely important, as these devices are a key element in ensuring safety in the event of fire or smoke in the building.
Tests are carried out to determine parameters such as: fire resistance, tightness, airflow efficiency, mechanical strength and many others. These tests are carried out by independent laboratories and certification institutes that have the appropriate qualifications and experience. Certification consists in issuing a document confirming the compliance of a given product with the requirements of standards and regulations regarding fire safety. In Poland, certification is carried out by the Certification Centre for Construction Products and Road Transport, and products that have been certified are marked with the CE mark. Testing and certification is essential to ensure the safety of building occupants. Therefore, when choosing fire and smoke dampers, it is worth paying attention to the certificates and technical parameters they hold.
Manufacturers and importers are directly responsible for ensuring the proper functioning of their products prior to installation and must be able to demonstrate that their smoke vents comply with applicable regulations in order to sell their products in their target markets.
In Poland, certification is required in accordance with the Act of 7 July 1994. Construction Law and the Regulation of the Minister of Internal Affairs and Administration of 29 July 2004 on fire protection of buildings, other structures and areas. These professional smoke protection devices must meet specific technical requirements, in particular in terms of size, fire resistance and durability, specified in the PN-EN 12101-2 Standard.
PN-EN 12101-2 is a standard for smoke and heat control systems. This standard specifies the technical requirements that must be met to ensure effective smoke extraction of buildings. This standard also specifies requirements for performance, robustness, and resistance to fire and steam.
These advanced elements of fire protection systems. must meet specific technical requirements in accordance with the PN-EN 12101-2 standard. These requirements include size, fire resistance and strength. In addition, they must have adequate resistance to fire and steam and meet the requirements for opening and closing.
Architects comply with the PN-EN 12101-2 standard by incorporating its requirements into the design of buildings. This standard specifies the technical requirements for smoke dampers that must be met to ensure effective smoke extraction of buildings. Among these requirements are requirements for size, fire and steam resistance, and requirements for opening and closing. Architects must also make sure that they will be properly installed and working properly.
International rules
In order to place products on the European Union (EU) market, manufacturers must obtain the CE mark for their products in accordance with the criteria set out in the product standards EN 15650 (fire dampers) and EN 12101-2:2005 (smoke vents). UL 555 (Fire Dampers) and UL555S (Smoke Dampers) – Dampers for single and multi-industry manufacturers who want to sell their products in the USA and GCC (United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Oman and Kuwait) define the requirements for system testing.
